BATAVIA – Those who come out to Sunday’s Batavia Block Party can sample what restaurants in downtown Batavia have to offer as well as learn how to Hula Hoop.

The theme of this year’s event revolves around the 1950s. Fitting with that theme, a classic car show also is part of the event.

“We are now including a classic car show, so we thought it could be a lot of fun to do a throwback to the ’50s,” said Joi Cuartero, director of Batavia MainStreet, which puts on the festival.

The event will be from 4 to 9 p.m. on the Batavia Riverwalk at Houston Street and North Island Avenue as well as on North River Street. The Batavia Block Party has expanded to both sides of the river this year after the completion of the streetscape improvements on North River Street.

Fourteen restaurants will participate in the event, offering drink specials and $2 tastings. Also fitting with the theme, Miss Jubilee will perform jazz, swing and rhythm and blues spanning from the 1920s to the 1950s.

In addition, the Batavia Academy of Dance will sponsor twist and Hula Hoop competitions, and judging will be at 6 p.m. for a pie bake-off.

River City Church also once again will host a free kids play zone at the Batavia Block Party. The free kids play zone will include bounce houses, snow cones, face painting and more for children 12 and under.

About 2,000 people came out for last year’s event, and Cuartero thinks this year’s event could attract even more people.

“We definitely have a lot more activities this year,” she said.
