1. Hickory Knolls’ Winter Olympics
WHEN: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5
WHERE: Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, 3795 Campton Hills Road, St. Charles
COST/INFO: Hickory Knolls Discovery Center will host its third annual Winter Olympics. The event is for participants ages 6 and older, which will compete in snowshoe relays and other games and then toast the “closing ceremonies” with hot chocolate. If the weather does not permit outdoor activities, the program will take place indoors with ice cubes, cotton balls and marshmallows. Children must be accompanied by an adult. 3. ‘True Tales of Aurora’ author at library

COST/INFO: The author of “True Tales of Aurora,” Matt Hanley, will talk about his book and where he came up with the ideas for some of the stories in it; how he researched the stories; some of the challenges of writing narrative nonfiction; feedback he has received since the book was published; and practical tips for how people can do their own personal historical research. 5. Parent’s Night Out

WHERE: Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center, 3507 Kaneville Road, Geneva
COST/INFO: The Geneva Park District will host Parent’s Night Out. While children play games, make crafts, watch movies and eat food, parents can enjoy an evening out. The event is for children ages 3 to 12. Children must be toilet trained. The cost is $15 a child for residents and $20 for non-residents.
