The Elgin Choral Union joins with the Fox Valley Concert Band and Elgin Children’s Chorus to give two grand-scale performances of Carl Orff’s epic Carmina Burana at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 20 at Elgin Community College Arts Center; and at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at the Norris Arts Center, St. Charles.
Well-known through its use on film soundtracks and in other media, Carmina Burana will come alive on stage in this distinctive band-choral arrangement.
Carl Orff was a composer, musician, and music educator active in the first half of the twentieth century. His 1936 Carmina Burana is a 25-movement work based on a series of medieval poetry with subjects ranging from nature to love to drinking songs. With its distinctive driving rhythms and simple harmonies, it remains one of the most popular pieces of 20th century classical music. Its topics of wealth, renewal, sin, and joy are as relevant with today’s concertgoers as they were with its 1937 premiere audience.
Tickets are $23 for adults, $18 for seniors, $15 for students, and $5 for children under 10 with purchase of adult or senior ticket. Group rates are also available. Purchase tickets by phone at 847-622-0300 or in person at the Elgin Community College Box Office, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. For more information, call 847-214-7225 or visit elginchoralunion.org.
