A Bilingual Mass
A new choral work, A Bilingual Mass, by local musician Thomas Reed will be performed on Sunday, March 13, at 4:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church , 203 W. Washington St. in Marengo. Written for choir, organ and solo cello, the work is a musical setting of the traditional words of the Mass in both Latin and English. The volunteer choir, with singers from Marengo and surrounding communities, represents more than a dozen churches of all denominations. The performance will be directed by John Butzow of Marengo, with Mr. Reed at the organ. Cello soloist will be Jill Kaeding-Gailloreto of Chicago who appears regularly with Corky Siegel and the Chamber Blues Band. The intent of this work is to present the beauty of the Latin text while including the English translation for clarity and meaning. It is hoped that Protestants can find in this work a deeper understanding and respect for the origins of their orders of worship and that Roman Catholics can appease their feelings of nostalgia for a time when the Latin Mass was the norm. This is Mr. Reed's eighth major choral work to have it's premier performance at the Presbyterian church where he is organist. A free-will offering will be taken with all proceeds to be donated to the Marengo Food Pantry
